Robert Joe grew up in the rural community of Pelly Crossing, home to the Northern Tutchone. In 2013, Robert became the first Indigenous person to graduate from Capilano University’s Motion Picture Arts Program, along with Kyle McLean, who was the first Inuit graduate. In 2012, he was one of the three students selected to direct a 10-minute class project titled: When the Clock Strikes Midnight. For his efforts, Robert won a Keith Cutler Award from the Director’s Guild of Canada. In 2021, Robert started a freelance visual/print media business, Broken Cycle Media. Since then he has worked with Yukon First Nations, governments, organizations, and businesses such as Selkirk First Nation, Yukon First Nation Education Directorate, Yukon Government Health and Social Services, and Gunta Business.
Robert's 2025 short film Fistful of Vodka has won several festival awards, Including Best Northern Short Film, Made in the Yukon Award at Available light Film Festival 2025.
